Oops! Kent Lind pointed out that the 500 can be taken apart without tools. =
I was thinking of the 400. (I'd still go with the 250).

Oren,
The 500 can't be dismantled without tools underwater; the 250 can. On =
a three man dive I checked my back-up reg (a G250) as we were entering the =
cave. It was passing water through the mushroom valve so I just unscrewed =
the front, removed the diaphram, cleared the debris in the valve and =
reassembled the unit. All the time I was doing this I stayed right with =
the other members of the team. It was so simple. I also wouldn't worry =
about performance. What a manufacturer lables as "best" is the result of =
some esoteric test (like "cracking pressure") done on a factory tuned and =
new regulator. Posiedon regs are supposed to be really good at the tests =
but in reality I haven't seen one in the field that was tuned worth a =
damn. If you're diving depth appropriate gasses than performance at depth =
isn't a factor. As George says, "When you're breathing helium, all =
regulators are high performance". If you're diving deep without helium, =
the reg is the least of your concerns.
