Hello David, >Then a crusty old engineer chimed in with a compromise: you dont need to >break the webbing to make it easier to ditch, you just need to make one arm >strap a bit longer. Therefore, catch a short loop of webbing in a quick >release down the bottom of the strap on the left hand side , leaving it >tucked away to avoid snag hazards. I've seen simmilar solution on one type of backplate harness produced and sold locally. These guys adopted solution used on fire-fighters breathing devices. Webbing is still continuous but there is very simple metal "shortener" which allow you to tighten the harness and release it anytime with one hand. As far as I know this device is used on most fire-fighters breathing devices at least around Europe, and that should be a guarantee that you can rely on that more than on plastic buckle :-)) I've seen another home installed metal buckle which was originaly part of a parachute webbing. It was impossible to release it accidentaly and it was virtualy undestroyable. And still It could be released with just one hand. Both of these solution provide necesary freedom when required and do not adopt dangers related to plastic quick release buckles (which I believe is the reason why DIR deny them and which are a piece of crap ) Regards Jozef Gliviak Slovakia -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
