Folks - I'm a new member of this list, having joined it after sending a request to the scuba archive on the subject of rebreathers and getting back many articles that refered me to the techdiver alias ;). I'm a PADI AOW diver with about 70 logged dives (and a few unlogged dives) in northern california and the caribean. Last weekend I went up to the tek95 show in San Francisco and discovered that something wonderfull was happening in the technical diving community, namely mixed gas rebreathers. I picked up some fascinating literature on the Oceanic Phibian(tm) CCS-50 and CCS-100. Today I visited my local IANTD shop (where I will be taking my level 1 deep air certification this spring) and had my bubble burst :(. Their opinion was that: 1) Oceanic was 'just teasing' about the Phibian; they didn't really have a product. 2) Closed Circuit systems like the Phibian were still restricted by the military and clasified as 'weapons', which meant that I didn't have a rats chance of training for one anytime soon. Can anyone out there refute one or both of these positions? I'd really like to continue believing that there *is* a Santa Claus. Thanks, Scott.
