I completely disagree. Accident analysis is one cornerstone in improving safety in any risky activity, and I'll bet you could find clear, documentable violations of "DIR best-known practices" in at least half these 59 diver deaths. In other words, they went with "personal preference" is okay, as opposed to taking advantage of collective expert experience, and DIED because of it. Personal preference amounts to telling students: "here, figure it out yourself". I don't know about you, but when my life is on the line, I want the expert body of knowledge at hand. The sad part is that when the average student wants to get into tech diving, he will go into IANTD or TDI and be given the "personal preference" cop-out instead of proven best-practices that might make the difference between life and death. That is why George and DIR folks hammer IANTD, TDI, and personal preference independents so mercilessly, as well they should.
