The list is once again embroiled in a great "controversy" about gear configuration. One list member would have us believe "DIR is dead". Is it? Keep your priorities in mind as you consider: The leading arguments against DIR's gear config include, - what if the long hose chokes me? - it's just one extra <whatever> -- no big deal - you can't tell me what to do - my gear hasn't killed me yet - that's not what my instructor taught me - those darn light cords keep wrapping themselves around the ladder and hanging me like an overstuffed pinata - george says naughty words The leading arguments in favor of DIR's gear config include, - task loading is minimized through simplicity - drag and entanglement risk is minimized - buddy awareness and preparedness is maximized - the dive is a more fun when you're not fighting your gear - going to your buddy's wife/mother/children and saying "dead" is one of the worst experiences imaginable Anyone out there sitting on the fence really ought to sit down and think about which of these arguments are more salient and relevant. The individuals who are more interested in talking about diving than the diving itself may find these points about evenly matched. For those of you who actually get in the water occasionally, however, the choice should be clear. It *matters*. Remember as well that there's a whole lot more to DIR than gear configuration, the specifics of which are really just the natural conclusion reached by applying logical, cogent points to the resources at hand.
