The unused Russian rebreather that I bought for $50 is designed for the military and is used to operate submersible trucks with snorkles for up to 3 hours ( submerged). If the user is walking on a river bottom in full battle dress, he should only expect 45 minutes of breathing time. If he is not physically active, he can expect 3 hours. The rebreather is designed to make the soldier battle-ready when he emerges from the water. The rebreather consists of a full face mask, breather bag (looks like a horse collar BC), cannister holder and cannister. The cannister has two openings for corrugated hoses which are sealed until it is used. There is a sealed lever on the side of the cannister which must be pulled to start the oxygen supply. The oxygen supply is either a pressurized cylinder or a chemox unit which is built into the throw-away cannister, I am not sure. Someone in Florida has already tried the unit and it works. Since the replacement cannisters are not available, he built a refillable cannister for the soda lime and a refillable oxygen tank. I am going to build my own rebreather from scratch (I've done this before), and don't need to play with the Russian unit. I'll keep it as a conversation piece . There are approximately 100 more units available, I believe. The problem with asking the Russians for replacement cannisters is that, once they know we want something.....the price goes up tremendously.
