Hi Guys, I came across an article in a recent magazine about PADI rebreather courses (for recreational use). They are offering: 1. The Dolphin/Atlantis Semiclosed Rebreather Specialty Course and 2. The Dragwer Ray Semiclosed Rebreather Course I looked at the entry requirements for the courses and here is a direct quote from the article: "To qualify for a rebreather course, a diver must be; minimum 15 years of age; be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, or PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent)with proof of minimum 10 logged dives after certification. In addition the diver must be certified as a PADI Enriched Air Diver or equivalent." So in effect we have PADI teaching 15 year old beginners with as few as 10 dives to use a rebreather. Now if you want to be an instructor: "For a PADI Instructor to apply for either Specialty Instructor rating he/she must have; the PADI Enriched Air Specialty Instuctor rating; the PADI Semiclosed Rebreather Specialty Diver certification (or equivalent); 20 logged dives on a semiclosed rebreather, regardless of method of application." Hmmm....now we have an instuctor with 20 rebreather dives (plus a few on the instructor course presumably) teaching a 15 y.o. kid with total of 10 dives to use a rebreather. Now I admit to having no experience of any kind with rebreathers, but to me this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Maybe those of you with rebreather experience could provide us with an informed comment on this issue. Cheers, Dave. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ocean Internet - "The Quality ISP" http://www.ocean.com.au/info.html -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
