Someone just mentioned using open circuit bailout on closed circuit systems. As I recall Rob Palmer, in his book _Deep into Blue Holes_, describes carrying ordinary stage bottles of heliox for bailout on his Andros rebreather dives. When I read this I was puzzled, because it seemed like he had enough heliox to get from depth to the cavern zone, but not enough to get to the surface, or even to get to surface supplied oxygen, without omitting stops. I suppose that being badly bent is better than drowning, but I'd rather not do either. If I were planning a big dive with a non-redundant rebreather, I would want not only a backup bottle of bottom mix, but also backup stages of decompression gas so that I could adequately decompress in case of CC failure. Do people using or teaching use of rebreathers worry about this, or do they just assume the risk of being bent? John
