Hey,
Someone sent me a question about the Horse Ferry here in burlington
harbor, and I could swear that I responded, but I haven't seen the post so
I'll repeat it.
The wreck is called the "Horse Ferry". It is so named because no one is
sure of it's name.It is believed to have been towed to Burlington in the
early 1800's to be sold at auction, now, because steam ships were making
commerce more reliable, animal power and sail ships were becoming, well
useless. When it didn't sell it was towed out and scuttled (we believe). The
reason it is thought to be scuttled is that many of the mechanisms that
would have had to be in use for the boat to move were stowed. This may seem
like a cop out but you can find more info about Lake Champlain from the lake
champlain maritime museum at www.lcmm.org , now I have not perused the sight
so I'm not quite sure what is there, but I know the sight is there.
Later
