John

Check out the EE page:

<http://www.extreme-exposure.com/spools.shtml>

The spools are Delrin "bobbins", with the advantage that they do not jam and
are compact. However, the line is limited to about 40m with normal cave
line, so they would be deployed mid water rather than from the wreck unless
it is shallow. The other thing to be careful of is that there is no handle,
so deployment with thick gloves (UK conditions) needs to be done carefully so
as not to drop the spool.

A ratchet on a reel is only needed if you winch yourself up. This is not the
best way as it places too much tension on the line and it is better to come
up close to neutrally buoyant.

I've just received my EE Sub Zero primary reel which differs in many
significant ways from the picture in the URL which is a very old design. The
current version looks to be perfect. I use my reel for DSMB deployment from
the wreck so that the SMB surfaces in the vicinity of the wreck where the
skipper can see it. I carry a spool as a backup.

George,

By "spool" do you mean a reel without the ratchet? I hate those things,
since they always seem so difficult to wind back in again when making the
ascent. Most I've seen have some kind of screw arrangement which you must
ensure is well open before you deploy, and (for me) is a pain to
tighten/untighten as I start/leave the stops. Since I seem to be in the
minority of ratchet lovers, what am I doing wrong?

Regards,

JT
