George,

By "spool" do you mean a reel without the ratchet? I hate those things,
since they always seem so difficult to wind back in again when making the
ascent. Most I've seen have some kind of screw arrangement which you must
ensure is well open before you deploy, and (for me) is a pain to
tighten/untighten as I start/leave the stops. Since I seem to be in the
minority of ratchet lovers, what am I doing wrong?
