Dear All,

happy new year,

Since I am new to this list (since the end of
december) a short introduction:

Gerard Wijnsma - Gerry for those who can't pronounce
it like I want :-)

Dutch

About 400 dives, most of them recreational. I am
beginning to get some technical interest, doing
wreckdives and (slightly) deeper ones.

Very much interested in the DIR concept.

a remark on this:

In the Netherlands, during a hydro, not only is
checked if the tank survives, but there is also a
maximum of stretching, which is measured during the
test. I find it hard to believe that this isn't the
case in the states.

Something else...
and although not a PADI diver, is the latest thread
not more something for rec.scuba? I am subscribing to
this list to learn something, not to hear the usual
we're good and you're not - shit. An attitude like
that is not DIR, it is dogmatic. I thougt the concept
of DIR (apart from reduce to the max) was thinking
things trough. A friend of mine is GUE trained, and
uses it also for his open water diving. So I am
slightly familiar whit it and yes I read the site.
Although I embrace the concept of DIR, i am a bit of a
jackass, I want to know the reason for something, not
just "do this because wesayso".

And to top things of with a question:

how realistic is breaking a acrylic cannister
(primary) in cold water (approx 5 - 10 degrees C). I
am thinking of buying one, but have in mind the story
of a shattered camera housing from the father of
another friend that still lies at the site (the
housing).

All the best...

Gerry
