Don, I copied this back to the list because it is so informative. Hope you do not mind.. A couple of things. Yes, constant running degenerates the joints. No, I did not get the injury from running or playing football, but when I got hit in the back of the head with a beer bottle and landed on my knees on the pavement, 25 years ago getting out of my car in a parking lot. Luckily for me, I had the defensive end in the front seat and the middle linebacker in the back, or I would have been dead. Jealous boyfriend thing - I got a lot of that in college. Today they just removed the pieces that had been flapping around all that time. Here is what I have found out - contrary to the usual thinking on this you do not need to do big runs to do big competition runs. You can do one hour runs and be fine . It is a whole new game beyond 12 miles, and all it does it cause damage. I also found that you do not need to do transitions from bike to run, and that the smart thing is to run and then ride for both the joints and the training .The best long distance cardio are the swim and the bike - you can swim a couple of hours without any damage, and you can ride a bike for five or six hours hard with no damage. These things, spinning, machines and some weights all mixed together give you the massive conditioning required to do endurance, without any of the damage, and a far better "look" and feel. I have never been in such good shape as I am now, and my whole metabolism and everything has changed with it. All the fat is gone and the elasticity of my muscles is back like is was years ago, and my streght is way up. I think you have to hit it hard in every way and then just show up every day. Long distance is a head game anyway. Cameron my have some other ideas on this, but I know that for me the full tilt boogie workouts are my thing now, and mixing it up is key.
