One of the things that I feel to be a disservice to divers is the lack of talk about panic in the classroom. As an instructor, I find that the students look to me as a role model. If, as the instructor, I relate an occasion when I panicked (a long time ago, but I don't tell THEM that), I find that they have been more likely to talk when they are feeling stressed; more willing to call a dive; more willing to admit to a (temporary) frailty. As technical divers, I guess that there's a large number of advanced divers and instructors here. Perhaps we should let our students know that we, too, are human and that it's acceptable to admit to ourselves when things are beyond us. I remember one day when a student made me very proud. They called a dive that everyone wanted to go on. They looked out at the pounding surf and stated in a calm voice, "That is a place for seals. Divers should sit on the beach." -- Kevin -- "I'll get around to it today -- For sufficiently large values of 'today'"
