Remember what a dive computer does: it tracks your theoretical tissue loading (based on a model) using your actual dive profile. This is normally not a problem with simple OW dives since you are doing no-stop non-deco dives. It is possible though to push a model right to the limits and not incur a theoretical deco obligation. This is rather dangerous and doesn't mean you won't get bent. Basic dive computers that do deco include this feature for emergencies only (so they say). You can model this yourself using Abyss. Try planning a dive and then vary some of the physiology factors: weight, fitness, smoker vs. non-smoker, diving experience levels, equipment (drysuit with air as inflation gas, drysuit with argon as inflation gas, etc), and see what you get. Deco should be planned thoroughly in advance of the dive. Otherwise, how do you know if you have the right gas in the right quantities for proper decompression ? How do you know if you have a sufficient gas reserve for your buddy in the event of a problem ? What if the computer expects you to switch to 36% and you only have 28% (I suppose a good computer would let you enter this) ? You could also inadvertently exceed your CNS clock and not know it until it's too late. One alternative is to plan the dive using a tool like Abyss and then generate contingency schedules in case you dive is shorter and/or shallower than you originally planned.
