How about 450 fpm?

This was one of the dive's Ron Ault did at NEDU. NEDU took 5 divers from
surface to 450fsw in 60 seconds,
in the chamber, to see how fast they could get a man down onto a sub in a
rescue scenario. He said they pulled a tube truck full of helium up to the
wall outside the chamber, and connected it through a 5 inch ball valve.

Of the five divers in the chamber, Ron had the comms. He was instructed to
sit, facing a porthole, with his hands held up as if he were being robbed,
hands open. If things got bad, he was to close his hands (in case he was
unable to speak to the docs outside) and stop the descent.

He said it was "Like being in the exhaust of a jet engine" with the heat and
pressure they were subjected to.

"At one point, I remember looking at my hands, because my brain was
screaming at them to close, and stop the descent, but they wouldn't close.
The compression was so severe, it just locked all your joints together. We
couldn't make a sound, as all our ribs were locked up. We got to the bottom,
and I was able to *force* my hand to close, and after about a minute or so,
I could talk. They asked "Are you OK?' I told them "NO! We are not OK it
hurts real bad, bring us out!" They asked "What hurts?" "Everything hurts
and it hurts bad. Get us up!" At this point they put a medical team into the
top lock, and started bringing them down to meet the upcoming divers, one of
which had lost consciousness. It was about two weeks before I could exercise
again."

Owie. We all owe these guys a beer or two.

Now, lets hear from Von on how he did that with one on an AL80 and with an
engine block.
