JT is correct. I have done many, many dives around here in the 80-140' range
on air and nitrox. On my first trimix dive to 200' I felt better during and
after the dive than I had on any other dive. Test's have shown that narcosis
starts to kick in as shallow as 60'. There is an certain euphoria associated
with diving, part of it is the feeling of weightlessness and most of it is
the narcosis buzz. As I have said before I believe that narcosis has an
addictive quality to it and is a major attractant to the sport of diving.

I suppose that there is an analogy to the weekend beer drinker (rec diving)
and the "let's eat the worm" crowd (deep air). Sooner or later the LETW type
dies a horrible death in a car accident, or a long, lingering death from
brain damage or cirrhosis of the liver. The interesting thing about narcosis
is there is no test you can take to see how "drunk" you were after your
sodden, waterlogged corpse is hoisted up from the depths. If you die from
drunk driving you can get a reading from a post-mortem blood test. Narcosis
would be the perfect high if it you did not have to do it in such an
incredibly hostile, deadly environment.

I think that a lot of money could be made if you could make a decompression
chamber big enough to build a disco inside of it. Take it down to 160',
everybody could have a great time, then deco them out and they would be
perfectly sober for the drive home. Perhaps this would be the ideal
environment to learn about narcosis, but deco chambers rarely have the time
to do joy rides for this purpose.

So you guys have a choice, do the deep air and roll the dice or do it right
and use trimix.

   Jim
