Cam, Just some suggestions... 1.) Some divers / cavers use a very small SUUNTO oil filled compass. You can attach a long velcro band that goes around suit and whatever gloves you have. These small compasses are only $10. Good enough to know where you essentially come from / where you're going. 2.) Play around with surgical tube. Looks like you have a strap on the thing anyway. How about making two holes on either side, cutting the rest off and pulling the surgical tube through (If you don't feel like cutting that thing, improvise and put the compass onto something you can make holes into). Then you can fix the ends of the tube with a knotted piece of nylon line, or another, essentially similar fixture, (two fixtures next to each other are always better than one) where it won't bug you. If using nylon, burn ends of line like usual. 3.) Try to get an strap in addition to your compass strap, often offered for the use with dry suits. My Hyper Aqualand has that (I don't need even with dry suit and my thickes gloves). 4.) If you're surveying then have the compass on your slate. The GUE page recommends to have at least 2 degree increments. So option 1 wouldn't be an option at all, if you want to be as close to DIR as possible.
