Subject: Re: DIR reg rigging
The reason for putting the wing inflator on the right post (right side
of the diver's body), is because the left post is the one that rolls
off when you contact the ceiling, and can break off. You do not want
to find out that your inflator is not working on descent when you hit
the button. Putting it on the right post with the long hose ensures
that, as long as you can breathe, your inflator will probably work. As
well, this routes the inflator hose behind your neck so that you have
an audible indicator of any gas flowing through the hose. The drysuit
inflator, in order to split the reg dependency between buoyancy
devices, must necessarily be on the left post, when you are not using
argon. It runs straight down, instead of behind the body to the right
side, because this uses less hose, minimizes movement of this hose, and
avoids confusion with the backup reg hose when performing a
reach-behind reg recovery. The inflator hose on the wings is on the
left side so as to be used by the left hand, and is designed to have
just enough mobility to move from your drysuit inflator to your mouth
and nose in the same hand. This is your tertiary backup (manual
addition) regulator when sharing gas and having lost the left post. If
you lose the left post and have to call the dive, and have a lot of ups
and downs on the way out, you can either get suit inflation gas from a
buddy or, by making your wing inflator long enough, switch that over to
put gas in your suit and then switch it back. If your suit inflator
faces the wrong direction, move it. Best bet is to use the argon
bottle.
