A fatality occured at the 40 fathom grotto this weekend during a =
trimix course, the trimix student died and both of the divers were =
instructors. I don't know for which agencies or what level of =
instructors these people are at this time. The instructor teaching the =
course survived and was unharmed.

The divers told the Grotto staff that they were to do 200' on air to =
prepare for the trimix dives. (200 ft. is the maximum depth allowed =
without Hal Watts present, I believe.) It wasn't until after the =
incident, when the data was downloaded from their *dive computers* that =
it was discovered they really did their air dives to 230'. (They had =
done the 230' on air the previous day with no incident; this indicates =
that the 230' depth was not an 'accident'.) The divers were not =
carrying stage bottles while "preparing for their trimix dives".

Apparently the instructor said that what happened is the pair =
descended to 230 feet and the student swam away from the instructor. =
The instructor got caught up in some lines and, by the time he =
disentangled himself, he could not find the student and was dangerously =
low on air. He ascended to (30 ft.??) and met a diver there, who shared =
air with him and led him over to the Grotto's O2 whips at 15 ft. =
Surface divers were alerted of the missing diver but he could not be =
found, though his fins were located. =20

The diver was found the next day by Hal Watts, in (160 - I think) =
ft. of water stuck under a ledge. The position of the diver, severly =
rigomorticised, indicated a struggle at the end.=20

Hopefully I have not made any errors in my account; this information =
came from a reliable source. If I have, in advance I apologize. =20
