Subject: Re: DIR FAQ
To all who mailed me about this:

My intent with this is to create a document that answers all of the
FAQ's, but is not in Q/A format. The trouble with Q/A is that in a
system approach to diving such as DIR, anyone reading the answer to a
specific question may be missing out on some important information that
was assumed for the purpose of answering that particular question.
Otherwise, each answer would need to be several pages long to be
undisputably complete. I want to build a modular document that
describes, in complete detail, the DIR system, starting from the bottom
up with the gear, answering all of the questions through step-by-step
logical reasoning, covering not only the gear but the planning, gases,
contingencies and all other hows and whys of DIR. Because I want this
to be an official DIR description, to be referred to in discussion and
debate, by DIR proponents and opponents, it will be composed in a more
formal style, dispensing with colloquialisms, name calling, cursing,
references to individuals, "track record", or anything else that the
strokes use to divert attention from the real issues in techdiver
arguments. By laying out the document this way, it effectively forces
a discussion to deal with the issues, rather than labelling the author
as a DIR Nazi and destroying any hope of useful discussion.
Entertainment should stay on the list.
