Since I posed a question on high powered lights to this list, I wanted to follow up with some information on what I finally got. Last week I bought a 50 watt handheld light made by Blue Water Technology, Inc. The light is well-designed for wreck diving, since it is a single welded aluminum unit with no cable or separate battery canister to snag. It has a lantern grip and is easy to use with a reel. It has a somewhat adjustable beam, and a locking switch that seems relatively resistant to unintended activation. Burn time is stated as 65+ minutes, but I used it Sunday on two successive 45 minute dives without recharging, so burn time seems more like 90+ minutes. In the five dives I have done so far, I have been very satisfied. If you are interested, you can call the manufacturer at 908-234-9264. Divers in the New England area can also get them through Capt. Eric of Grey Eagle Charters. John P.S. Bad news for NY/New England divers - I was diving the U853 this past Saturday. When I went into the forward torpedo room, I discovered that someone had taken the famous torpedo loading hatch (the one with the name "Hannelore" written on it). This apparently happened in the past two weeks. The only good news is that now current runs through the tube, so that if some yoyo trashes the forward compartments the silt clears quickly.
