Clear enough now; that was exactly what I was trying to understand. In my case, I have the wrong kind of canister light (itty-bitty Dive Rite toy "Wreck Lite") that would only take off a pound or two if I dropped it. So, until I have cash for the right light (HID), I should probably maintain some other droppable weight, on a weight belt (Arghh!).
