Potassium superoxide was used as an absorbent in a rebreather device in use by the US Navy during my stint '65-'69. This was an extremely simple device consisting of a mask, canister & breathing bag (counter lung). This device was called an OBA (oxygen breathing apparatus) and worked quite well for fighting fires for which it was intended. Contact of the potassium superoxide with hydrocarbons(diesel oil, fuel oil, etc.) was extremely hazardous! (BOOM!!!). Just a bit of trivia!
