Subject: Re: Newbie question
"Gin Clear" is a term used by Dr Bill Stone in Exley's book describing
Manatee Springs, a sewer and a half that gets a blueish tinge to the
sewage if the river rises about six feet over normal and stops the flow.

The clear spring tunnels in Wakulla and Indian we video to show the
beauty, but the conduit cave known as Leon Sinks, and the Wakulla
Conduit are anywhere from 10 foot to 50 foot vis at best and the slugs
we video there are near where springs come into the main cave and clear
the water for a space. Here we do it to show the size of the cave. The
rest of the cave is piss poor video material, but JJ and I videoed the
entire stretch between Big Dismal and Cheryl when we set that record
14,000 foot traverse, and you can not tell it from anyplace else, and
that is more like what we get at best.

Most of what we do is not "clear" by anyone's standards. The best it
ever got was last year while Stone had us shut out - never been that
good ever for us.

The water is not cold enough to need gloves, but it is cold enough to
need an undersatding of thermal since we have it running over us at 2
knots for hours , and then have to decompress in it for hours. Our WKPP
affiliates in other countries do dive very cold water in both cave and
ocean, and they "modify" their gear by using gloves and larger clips -
nothing else. Our guys go there go dive with them and have no problems.

The bad vis arguement is crap anyway. The worse the vis , the better you
need to have yourself and your team organized. Personal preference and
nonsense won't fly in bad vis. Our teamwork and buddy skills ( a strong
elemnt of DIR ) is what allows us to operate in bad vis.
