I also remember diving before backplates; the cylinder rested directly 
against my back. Few wore divers' lifejackets, and if a modern stab-jacket had 
fallen through from the future, it would likely have been sent straight to 
Area 51 in case it was a bit of UFO pilot's kit.

But in these days of stabs, who sells plain old-type aqualung cylinder 
harnesses any more?, like on fireman's breathing sets, and on e.g. spray-packs 
and flamethrowers.
