That will be some trip, I am jealous as hell!! I dived Truk Lagoon in =
1991
when we were filming the two Ghost Ships of Truk Lagoon videos.=A0 To =
me as a
dedicated wreck diver Truk was the most fantastic dive location in the
world. Things may have changed since then but for such a famous =
location,
when I got there I was surprised to see how poor the dive facilities =
were. I
dived with Blue Lagoon who were the biggest at the time. Their Dive =
Shop was
small, stocked for the basics only and their boats small=A0 15 - 20 =
feet
marine ply jobs. Truk is a protected underwater site and a guide had to
accompany us. They were very passive and just hung around in the =
background,
watching. That said each dive was epic. I have never been in engine =
rooms as
big as some of the cavernous ones in these huge Jap freighters. Because =
Truk
is a protected site and guides watch what is going on, nobody takes =
anything
from the wrecks - as a result everything is still there. You go into a
galley and the crockery, sake glasses etc are still all there. In the
bridges you will see helms, compass binnacles, telegraphs etc. Each =
porthole
is still in place, as is a lot of serious ordnance, eg the holds full =
of
16inch shells for the big Jap battleships. There are Zero's, Betty =
bombers
etc to vary the diving.=A0=20
Most of the wrecks there were sub 40msw and we just dived air - there =
were
no technical facilities then, the guides were not keen on much deeper. =
There
were only a few occasions we went deeper than that eg, in the bowels of =
an
engine room and on the Nippo Maru,=A0 famous for the small 2 man Jap =
tank on
its main deck that still looks as tho' it would drive. No doubt they =
have
got nitrox by now, it would be sensible given the depths but
trimix.......... I don't know.
There are perhaps some deeper wrecks in the Lagoon which people just =
weren't
diving then. There were also a few floating gin palace liveaboards =
which may
offer mix now. You can check out this sort of stuff on the net. If you =
want
to see the Truk videos by way of background=A0 you can get them through =
the UK
Diver magazine which is online.=20
We combined a week in Truk with a week in Palau. Although less well =
known,
Palau has as many wrecks as Truk and more varied diving, eg 1,000 foot
walls, lots of sharks, small caves etc.=20
I have always hankered to go back to Truk, I thought seriously about it =
for
this year but it didn't work out. If you need bodies then let me know =
what
you are planning.=20

Rod Macdonald
