At least I get what Joel was saying when he put the original Seven Years Ago post out. I have been wreck diving since 79 and ya my deepest is 210 on air in 1983 - So What. For the wrecks that I like I do not need to go deeper. Now for the history that Joel was getting at. I pulled out my copy of Gary Gentile's Advanced Wreck Diving Guide and the copy right is 1988. I remember the buzz at the 88 or 89 Sea Rovers convention when people looked at page 65 and saw a photo of divers on a DECO stop at 30' with hooka rigs with 100% O2 at 20' and 10'. This was from the start of Billy D's deep wreck training days. The buzz was didn't Gary think he might be in for a big liability for showing how to do 100% O2? In the late 80's: -Large volume tanks, steel or aluminum, were not available the largest were the old steel 94's. Aluminum 80's were the standard and many still used 72's -He mixes where something that some did but that some where less then 100 and they did not talk about it. -Computers where new and not many had them. There were no NITROX computers -There was no NITROX -There was no NITROX or mix training -I think Dive Rite had just started the first wings type BC within the last year or so -A very deep dive was 220 and few if any went deeper then 250 -There were no back plates, V weights, and harnesses -There were no isolator valves for manifolds. And except for the Sherwood Benjamin manifold (The only manifold around until Sherwood came out with the Genesis line) there were no manifolds (Ya US divers did put out some for the NAVY but they were J valves and had only one regulator port). -DUI suits were referred to as Death Under Inflation suits because of early valve defects. -Rebreathers were something that the military had and there was some question of wheather they would be allowed to the public as the Navy saw them as a terrorist weapon system. -Custom computer DECO tables were not around (Lap Tops were not around and the 286 chip was FAST) - There was Death Think about it, that was ONLY 10 YEARS AGO. Now think about what the community has been able to do. Think about how far the WKPP has pushed in these 10 years. Think about the fact that this list gets into arguments about gear that has only been around for less then these 10 years. Now tell me that there has been no progress.
