While doing some research on the "save me" thread I came across the following article which was germaine to the previous PFO thread of a month ago or so. Summary: DAN Europe research group recently conducted a study on the incidence of PFO in decompression accidents to try to determine whether a PFO led to increased risk for _recreational_ diving. "If we compare the data obtained from the two groups each of 37 divers, we obtain a 62% incidence of patent foramen ovale in the group of divers who had accidents (43.5% in the control group). From the investigations carried out it results that patent foramen ovale is present in 88% of the divers with cerebral damage and 40% in those divers with peripheral neurological symptoms." More discussion to the point that presence of a PFO should not prohibit recreational diving, but... "we can state that any error or excessively fast ascent speed could, in these cases, involve a grater(sic) risk" Bottom line: If you have a PFO, don't ever let those bubbles get started because they'll end up in your brain. http://www.daneurope.org/articles/epfo.htm Later, Don W. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
