Funny you should title this "H1 Bulbs" since I've been trying to find out the last few days why they are often called that, when they are not H1 bulbs at all - the real H1 is a halogen bulb used in auto lights and quite different from what we use in dive lights. The answer seems to be, that Dive-rite and maybe others originally used the "real" H1 bulb, and went on using the name for test tube lights long after they'd switched to the bipin bulb. The bulb we are talking about doesn't seem to have a clear name (though the preferred high output projector version has an ANSI code, BRL) It's a bipin with a G6.35 base, but this just refers to the fact that the pins are 6.35 of some metric unit apart. It's also called a T-3, 31/2 or 4, but that just refers to the fact that its a tubular bulb, and the diameter. I mention this, because if one orders an H1 bulb from a non-dive supplier, one may be in for a dissappointment. While I'm at it, I'd assumed that all good techies and cavers knew about Bulb Direct www.bulbdirect.com 800-257-0760 but I've gotten a few emails from people wondering where I ever got the bulbs that cheap. Good folks - they can talk bulbs, color temperatures and lumens, and really know their stuff, ship fast, and are cheap. Plus they have those little porcelein sockets for $3! -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
