From John F. Beninati we learn: An unfortunate characteristic of
Ni-Cad technology is what some people call "memory effect." And yes,
if you want the battery to retain a charge for as long as possible you
should drain the battery completely before recharging it. No, you
should not "top upp" the battery as you would a lead-acid battery. A
slightly better technology is Ni-MH (less memory effect). An even
better technology is Li-ion (no memory effect).
And from Eric Rosenkratz we learn: New nicads do not have memory no
matter what anyone says.. You should deep cycle them but not
completely discharge them - the best thing to do is get a high
performance charger that pulse charges them .. Tekin and Maha make
great chargers for this. Trickle charging does not do a great job.
Many of these chargers have a maintenance mode as well ..
So which is it, gentlemen? To drain or not to drain. That is the
question before us, here, today. Be that as it may, we can all agree
that superior technology exists. BTW... is that Tekin and Maha or
Tekna and Mako? Forgive my ignorance of the companies. ;)
Aloha, Paul
