George Irvine,
My advice to people on the list comes from twenty one years of diving
experience.  You are incorrect in stating that my advice is worthless.  If
you don't like my opinion on light choices that is your perogative.  As far
as my being a smart ass I could never hold a candle to you in that regards.
Last time I checked this was the techdiver list not the caver list.  I only
have sixteen cave dives with maximum penetration being 2,700 ft.  My
opinions are based as I said before on twenty one years of ocean, wreck,
lake and minimal cave experience.  By the way I am flattered that you would
take the time to investigate my experience level.

The fact is you have no more cave dives than what it took you to
complete a "resort course" in Mexico, and we both know that to be true,
yet you have no reservations about getting on here and passing out
worthless "advice".

Another fact of life is that I have many cave lights, some by Lamar
English, some by Bill Gavin, some by Arnold, Alex Varouxis, Barry
Miller, and some that I made myself. Along with that fact of life goes
the fact of life that I can make , buy or build anything I want, and do
so from the vantage point of extreme use. 

In all cases, the lights have certain things in common that are
necessary but are missing from the hood light.

1) the canister is recessed at the bottom or otherwise made by another
trick which we will not mention

2) in the case of the Barry lights, the canister is unbreakable

3) the length of the canister is such that the battery fits exctly when
compressed 

4) the light is negative by the correct amount

5) there is no slop in the battery

6) there are no switches hanging down or other baloney in the lid to
break

7) there are no circuits or fuses in the light canister to fail ( the
hid versions have a circuit in the head, but we carry replacement slugs
with those)

8) there are no crappy connectors in the light

9) the cord runs through the lid with a proper compression fitting, and
not some plastic insanity ( like the hood) or other insecure arrangement
that would allow the cord to slide and hence leak

10) the other end of the cord is equally secure

11) the slug fits exactly to the head

12) the head has exactly the correct reflector ( which is replaceable)
for the perfect focus

13) the batteries plug in with no moving wires by putting the lid on in
the correct oreintation

14) the pivot point is selectable for the belt loop  

15) the o-rings are surface blowouts only , no embedded stupidity

16) there are other wiring issues in the head, but we will skip that for
now

17) the overall lngth of even the nicad version of my lights is shorter
than anything made elasewhere for the same power, and hence fits more
easily along the side of the diver with no discomfort or clustery

18) only a braindead stroke would buy some has-been verion of nothing
made by noboyd  when the real thing is available from the pros.

19) you are a known rookie at this, and your attraction to this light
alone makes it suspect.

20) I have more, but I will let somebodly else finish this one off for
real.
