An unfortunate characteristic of Ni-Cad technology is what some people call "memory effect." And yes, if you want the battery to retain a charge for as long as possible you should drain the battery completely before recharging it. No, you should not "top upp" the battery as you would a lead-acid battery. A slightly better technology is Ni-MH (less memory effect).
