Although the seas were forecasted to be 3-5 feet, I had the sneaking
suspicion that things would be better than promised today, and I was not
disappointed. Swells of the predicted size were passing through when we got
to the San Diego, things settled down to flat calm by the time I got in the
water with Hank at around noon. Everyone who had already been in the water
had reported excellent visibility, the likes of which were too amazing to
believe. But when I got down to 40 feet, I could see the hull of the wreck
quite clearly! Visibility at the bottom had to be at least 40 feet, and it
was very brightly lit as well. Bait fish were schooling around openings in
the hull of the wreck just aft of our mooring, making it feel more like a
dive in North Carolina than the Northeast. The balmy 61 degree water
temperature added to this feeling. Hank and I spent a few minutes playing
around with my scooter, then we left it by our stage bottles and entered
the wreck. We swam through the wreck hunting for lobsters and sightseeing.
Although I had passed through every place we went numerous times before,
the visibility was so excellent inside that I could see further down side
passages than ever before. Even when we made a mess grabbing for lobsters
(one of which treated me to a nice bite), the silt we stirred up cleared up
almost immediately, even though the current that was carrying it away was
not noticeable. Beautiful blue green light shined in through many openings
that do not normally provide enough light to notice while my dive light is
on. Outside the wreck, near the bow, it was even lighter than it was
towards the stern, and the sand was reflecting the light, too. I could see
the debris on the bottom quite clearly from the top of the hull. During our
entire decompression, we saw albacore tuna schooling at a depth of about 40
feet -- another sight I had never witnessed in this area. Although I've had
many great dives on the San Diego with significantly less visibility, I
would not be disappointed if we were treated to conditions like this on a
more regular basis.
