<html> <br> ><b>TO ALL CONCERNED DIVERS - TIMELY RESPONSE REQUIRED!<br> <br> </b>><br> ><br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Over Labor Day weekend, 3 divers were caught stealing artif= acts off<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 the Steamer NEW YORK at Port Sanilac.=A0 A boater saw a= lift bag come<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 to the surface, and reported it to the local sheriff.=A0 Th= e divers<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 were apprehended by the local sheriff and the DNR and taken to<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Sanilac County Jail.=A0 Apparently caught red handed.=A0 Th= eir diving<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 equipment was confiscated, but their boat wasn't. It is also<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 reported that these same divers were also recently caught stealing<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 from another wreck by the by the Canadian Coast Guard and l= et go,<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 with no action.=A0 However, a report was written efforts ar= e being<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 made to obtain a copy.=A0 The theft from the NEW YORK=A0 wa= s reported<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 in the Sanilac area newspaper on Monday.<br> ><br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Jim Stayer called me Tuesday night asking for ideas and requesting<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 support to help insure that this case is prosecuted, rather than<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 disposed of with a plea bargain.=A0 Last night Jim gave me = the fax<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 number for the Sanilac County Prosecutor's Office.=A0 The n= umber is<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 810-648-2332.=A0 Jim has asked me to forward the above fax = number to<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 club members, asking them to fax some letters to the Sanila= c County<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Prosecutor, expressing their concern over the theft of artifacts<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 from our shipwrecks, and urging that the case be prosecuted= to the<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 fullest extent of the law.<br> ><br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 I don't know that all club members feel quite this= strongly, but I<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 believe that most of those members who dive in the Great La= kes are<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 concerned, and could at least urge that the case be prosecuted,<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 rather than pushed aside with a plea bargain.=A0 It is prob= ably a<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 sure bet these divers won't go to jail.=A0 Shipwreck artifa= ct theft<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 is not a serious enough crime to warrant that, but I would hope<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 these divers get dealt with seriously enough such that they'll<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 think long and hard before they attempt stealing from anoth= er one<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 of OUR shipwrecks.=A0 The problem we have is that artifact = theft is<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 not viewed as a serious crime, and is normally not dealt= with in a<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 very serious manner.=A0 As a result this destruction to= OUR<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 shipwrecks continues.<br> ><br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Anyway I request that all members of the Ford Sea Horses an= d Ford<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Sea Lancers who read this weigh the issue=A0 in their own m= inds, make<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 their own individual decisions, and write whatever letter t= hey feel<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 appropriate to the Sanilac County Prosecutor.=A0 Jim Stayer= tells me<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 that a response from the diving community will be of assist= ance to<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 the prosecutor in making his decision whether or not to prosecute<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 this case.=A0 This is OUR opportunity as Great Lakes Divers= to send<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 OUR message that we care about the preservation of Great Lakes<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Shipwrecks.<br> ><br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 13th (Monday), so=A0 any letters<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 that get written should be written and faxed out quickly.= =A0 Please<br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 fax your letter to:<br> ><br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Sanilac County Prosecutor -=A0 fax=A0 number=A0= 810-648-2332.<br> ><br> >=A0=A0=A0=A0 Thank you for your consideration.<br> >=20 <BR> Underwater Outfitters </html> -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
