Will, I dive with people that use the G250/20 Combo, and I've used them myself about 15 or 20 times. I think one of the most common problems is the poppit (sp?) on the second stage wears out. (which, I think, is just a second stage seat type of thing). I know the wkpp uses that combo almost exclusively for their main regs. The only think I see you are doing is using the 500 & 400 seconds, but I don't know why or what the difference is. For me, the SP and the Apeks are equal regs, except when it comes to price and availability of parts to the laymen. That's where Apeks comes in hands down.
