ROV pilot, if that counts...  I work for International Submarine
Engineering, which has designed and manufactured several manned
submersibles, ROV's and AUV's.  It is definitely nice to do a dive
without 100+ pounds of gear on your back.  Are you sure that the sub
you speak of is only rated to 500?  That seems rather shallow for a
manned atmospheric.  Even Phil Nuytten's new Exosuit is depth rated to
650, which should cover most of the continental shelf.
