Subject: deep air stupidity
This recent thread on deep air, specifically the part about one's
ability to play chess while under the effects of narcosis prompted me
to perform an experiment. Last night, my buddy Chris and I had a game
of chess at 30msw. I routinely beat Chris at chess at the surface (90+
percent of the time, at an estimate), so I volunteered to do this dive
on air, while he used an 18/50 mix. Deco for both of us was done on
all the proper gases, because we are inquisitive, not stupid. Another
diver on gas was present to monitor us, the game, and to make sure I
got all of my good marble chess pieces back. Chris mated me in 31
moves. After the dive, looking at the game record I could not believe
some of the stupid moves I had made. Hopefully this will put to rest
the debate on narcotic impairment - this was only a 30m EAD! Of
course, I would have to perform this experiment a few times to get a
decent statistical sample, but I have no desire to further subject
myself to the beating of an air dive. Oh, and thanks to Extreme
Exposure for the Explorer 24 which illuminated the game for us.

-Sean
