Subject: Solomon Islands
Dear List,
Three of us went over and dived the USS Aaron Ward with Franck at the Dive
shop in Honiara at the Solomon Islands about a month ago.
The Aaron ward is about 55m to the bridge,
62m to the deck,
69m (225 feet) to the broken lifeboat on the bottom.
It is up right and intact.
Guns still facing upwards as she went down fighting the Japanese.
The Aaron Ward is magnificent.
We sent two G cylinders of Helium over from Australia.
That took about three months by sea.
Four of us did three trimix dives on the Aaron Ward.
Two air dives and one trimix dive on the John Penn.
It again highlighted the use of 'Mix' to control ppO2 and Narcosis.
For the trimix dives we carried:
One cylinder of trimix.
One cylinder of air.
One cylinder of EANx50
Surface supplied O2.
20 min BT, 60 - 65 min deco.
The cost of the trimix for each dive was about $ 125 AUD.
EXPENSIVE.
But when you add up the loss of income and cost to get there, it is
immaterial.
Having travelled to the deck on Air and then changed over to 'trimix B'
(I know tut tut)
The old saying
"been there done that on air, can't remember a thing"
was never truer.
This wreck is a delight to dive on trimix.
I personally do not want to dive over 55m on air.
Why do people want to set themselves up to teach air diving to, what was
it?........74meters!!!
Anyone interested, trimix diving can be organized out of Honiara.
The Aaron Ward is over at Tulagi, on the other side of Guadalcanal.
Their are several other wrecks of ships and planes to dive.

Anyway,
Jeff Swann
Darwin Australia.
