]SCOTT AND ANDREW COHEN, AND MARK LEFEVRE: O rings that come standard in the
regulator are changed only at annual maintenance and only with conventional
O rings. There is excessive oxidation of some metal parts inside the first
and second stages but again these are changed out at annual maintance as
well. The oxygen regs are used exclusively with oxygen. I have a 330 cu ft.
cylinder of aviator's oxygen 2250 psi) on boat with a scuba valve attached
to the outlet. The first stage (US DIVERS PRO) attached there is connected
to a 25 ft. long hose which has a stainless steel ball valve (3000 psi) at
the other end. The valve is attached to a metal block which holds two 7 ft.
long whip hoses to which are attached SHERWOOD second stages. The single
down hose is attached along its entire length to a long 1/2 inch rope which
is tied to the boat at one end and has a twenty pound weight on the other
end. The rope is lowered down such that the stainless ball valve is at 20
fsw; the weight on the rope is located at 30 fsw. Decompression on pure
oxygen takes place at 20 fsw. I use two identical arrangements as described
to decompress four divers. I have used this system for twelve years; and the
last five years on the U.S.S. Monitor and the past three years on the CSS
Alabama. The french divers in Cherbourg, France independently developed
almost the identical system minus the ball valve. The french divers have
never oxygen cleaned their regulators. I have never had a problem with
deterioration of my system by oxygen. I have never oxygen cleaned any part
of this system ever. The entire hose system undergoes annual maintenance.
