This line of reasoning has always seemed correct and logincal to me but it is not my experience. At depths of 100' and deeper, I feel that I am in total control of my breathing. I can slow down my breathing to rates at which I get headaches from high levels of CO2 in my blood, perhaps 1 - 1 1/2 breaths per min. My understanding is that these headaches are caused by dialation of blood vessels in the head from high ppCO2 in the blood. (Am I wrong?) These headaches disappear soon after increasing my breathing rate. This slow breathing is done without any feelings of discomfort and feels natural and relaxing. It does require some level of awareness of my breathing but this is always true when I dive. Is this unusual? Philp Weissman
