You asked for opinions, so fwiw... TO my way of thinking, air is best to breathe on the surface, at roughly sea level. At higher elevations, our bodies adapt. In the water, I think it is rarely the best thing to use, if ever. I can't think of a single dive that couldn't be done quite nicely with a judicious choice of various mixtures of Oxygen, Nitrogen and Helium.
