The way I see it is this - is someone is going to slug you, would you rather they do it with a 3 inch or 3 foot swing? It's true with a hammer, a tug, or a slug, the longer the swing, the harder the final impact will (usually) be. The heating you will feel on the tube is actually of secondary concern - what one is concerned with is not the normal compressive heating, but the superheating that can occurs at the point where the charge recompresses, which can be so intense and localized that it may never be apparent from the outside - unless it gets high enough to ignite something. >If you have a 30ft tube closed at one end and rapidly introduce ,say, 200bar >O2 to the other end the tube will take a second or two to pressurise and >will get hot.
