Hi, I've been on this list for the past 2 weeks, reading the archives and trying to learn about technical diving. It's a great resource and I wish I'd read it before I spent some of the money I have on useless kit. Now I've got some specific questions and would welcome your advice. I've been doing recreational diving for the past 2 years; I dive mainly in the English Channel where I live, plus other parts of the UK and the odd trip to the Red Sea. Although I'm not yet an advanced diver, I want to get into tech diving and eventually dive some of the wrecks further offshore in the 40m - 50m range. As I haven't got the time to do as much diving as I would like this isn't going to happen all at once; not do I have the money to replace my kit all in one go. What I want to do is to put together a Hogarthian rig in a modular way - when I buy kit from now on I want it to be useable for whatever diving I end up doing. I've decided to replace my regs now, but not to get doubles and wings until next year. Meanwhile I'll continue to use my 15 litre single cylinder (bulky, but I get 2 dives out of it without returning to shore for a fill) and Buddy Profile jacket. I'm planning to buy ScubaPro Mk20/G250 as my main reg, as I currently use a Scubapro Mk10/R190 and it's always been brilliant. I would like advice on the following points - Should I get a 5m or a 7m long hose? This is for open water diving: I don't ever plan to do deep wreck penetration. For a 7m hose how do I stow the extra length when wearing a jacket rather than wings? Any particular make of hose? What about the backup reg - I've been told the ScubaPro Mk20/R380 is fine. Should I replace my tank valve and use two first stages? Or use one first stage with the existing pillar valve? Can anyone recommend a good nitrox instructor on the South Coast of England? I think that's all, but if you think I should know anything else then go ahead ...
