It has been wonderful to watch the hysteria and polarisation this thread has evoked. Someone mentioned using O2 at 1bar for DCI and missed deco stops. Assuming these are distinct, that is, the missed-stop diver is symptom free, I am suprised that anyone would consider surface O2 as an alternative to a standard missed-stop variation recompression. Since no-one on this list would have insufficient gas available to conduct this variation, I can only imagine deteriorating weather, undue interest from marine life or some accident. What are peoples thoughts on missed-stops? There has been much consideration about the time until retrieval to a RCC for definitive treatment as the deciding factor in initiating IWR. Surely this is a minor consideration. The major considerations should be, can this diver be managed during IWR? Consider: equipment, expertise, environment, the divers' (patient and attendants) physical and mental condition and ability, and anything else others may wish to add to the list. If you cannot safetly conduct IWR do not, if you can and are willing, perhaps you should, regardless of how long retrieval is going to take. If the IWR is on O2 you can stop and will still have reduced the N2 load. More an issue in my mind than the arrival of helicopter, is if you have to effect the retrieval yourself. Do you delay while you try IWR or do you speed off in your boat or car towards a chamber? regards, David Doolette ddoolett@me*.ad*.ed*.au*
