Subject: Dr. Dan Manion

My recent (Dec 9) phone conversation with Dan Manion was prompted by
the question from Rich Pyle in a private communication:

> Is Dan going to Tek 95, do you know?

"Yes, right after DEMA -- that's his current plan." was my short answer.
I elaborated on some details about Dan to Rich.

Since there seemed to be some "heated? :-)" discussions on other LISTS
(where I rarely read or post now) on the threads (threats? ;) of "Deep
(air) Dives" and "Narcosis" and related topics, I thought I would use the
opportunity to give an updated report on Dr. Dan Manion here (techdiver)
while providing a few points of clarification on my earlier postings in
April and October (on this LIST) about Dan.

In my <Tue, 26 Apr 94 14:51 EDT> posting, I wrote

> Dr. Dan Manion set a world record for the deepest scuba dive on compressed
> air (525') in Nassau in March : ... :

CLARIFICATION: This offical record of 525' is ffw, not fsw, because it was
taken from his computer reading which recorded depth in ffw. 525 ffw is
approximately equivalent to 511 fsw.

In my <Wed, 05 Oct 94 12:25 EDT> posting, I wrote

> We did about 20 or so dives together, half of them "deep"
> (read 350 - 485 fsw for Dr. Dan; 250 - 350 fsw for Sue; and 175 - 199 fsw
> for me ... to keep from breaking the range of ALL my computers ;). Sue
> broke the women's world record (by going 371 ffw) during that week.

CLARIFICATION: Sue's depth of 371 ffw remains an UNOFFICIAL world record.
No application for it to be recognized as "official" has been made, to date.

UPDATE: I didn't know it at the time (Oct. 5) that Dan had been
quadriplegic for nearly SIX weeks at the Miami Hospital up to the time
of his release (Oct. 6). He is recovering remarkably well, but still far
from complete. He can walk unaided now, though using crutches as aid for
the most part; he is continuing weekly physical therapy, and goes to the
gym regularly for "workouts" on his own; his neurological recovery is
not complete (he still suffers from occasional spasms), and he still has
pains from the hit. Thus, he appears to be on a long, arduous route of
recovery and rehabilitation and is making great progress.

When I posted on Oct. 5, all my info were 2nd-hand. I wrote,

You may still do so, at the address:

This posting is prompted in part by Dan, who seemed eager to let his
tech-diving friends know that his DCI hit was

==========> "NOT related to his technical dives." <==========

That was the main message he wanted me to get across on his behalf. His
deepest and and most technical ones were all successful during that trip:

He did TWO air dives to below 500 fsw to "reconfirm" (for himself) --
(I don't know exactly what that means -- just reporting as I heard it from
the man himself) his 525 ffw record. He made successful air dives to
523 ffw and 518 ffw that week, in addition to some deep trimix dives with
Paul Christman, the deepest of which was 544 fsw.

It was true that he was hit on a "shallow" bounce to 298 ffw. He admitted
THAT was his own "screw up" because he did an unplanned "double bounce"
on that dive ... I didn't ask for the gory details. Perhaps it could be
said that he teased the devil once too many. However, I'll not speculate
even on that theory.

Perhaps Rich (Pyle) or anyone else planning to attend Tek 95 will give us
an update if and when he meets Dan.

Good and Safe Diving to all,
