I've just returned to Bahrain from a diving weekend in Saudi Arabia (Yeah I know!)Whilst I was there I tried to get my tanks filled in a local dive shop. They refused on the grounds that the pillar valves did not have bursting discs. I eventually found a sympathetic shop that would oblige, but what a hassle! I believe that the majority of the dive shops in Saudi follow US regs and standards. Is there a directive from DOT that commercial dive shops should not fill if the valves are fitted with discs? My gear is mainly Brit. made and Brit. valves do not have discs fitted. I do not subscribe to the theory that these discs are fitted to protect cylinders that are left in the sun, more likely they are fitted to prevent over filling by careless technicians. But, IMHO, if a cylinder is going to pop, it's more likely that it will go before it reaches the relief pressure of the disc! Corroded walls / damaged cracked neck threads etc. Any feedback would be appreciated. Ace McAlpine A non-ironic Brit! -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
