- Hi, Vinnie, I thought you'd left? :-)

_I_ use a auto inflate DSMB for the following reasons:
=95 I do not have to purge a second stage with the mouthpiece facing=
 upwards,=20
something that can easily make the reg freeze in our waters (0-15 degrees=20
C): this is the primary reason.
=95 I have an _extra_ unobtrusive means of getting to the surface.
=95 It's easier to inflate the DSMB if I were to have a buddy on the long=20
hose
=95 It's convenient to fill even in shallow water.

Backdrafts:
=95 It could auto inflate but I've never heard of this happening (I think=
 the=20
possibility is remote)
=95 It's a bit more bulky (I carry mine on the back crotch strap D-ring)
=95 If the cylinder fails, it's useless (I carry a _small_ saussage bungied=
=20
to my backplate on its left side: I can easily reach it but it's totally=20
unobtrusive: theoretically I don't need this as my buddy has the bachup but=
=20
it's so small and out of the way I don't mind)

I use the JD AutoMark DSMB as it's much taller and hence more visible and=20
less subject to chopping wave action.

I see Halcyon makes one you plug you inflator into which would prevent the=
=20
freeze-up, but from what I can see it can be a bit tricky not to get stuck=
=20
when inflating it.

-------------------------------------------------
1. They're not DIR

- Why?

2. If you forget to fill the inflate bottle, they're useless - you can't do
a manual inflate. Also, as just about everyone had DIN and the bottle was
A-clamp, there were problems filling it.

- Use an adaptor.

3. They often unravel during a dive - or more particularly when you jump in
and sometimes you just don't realise that it's 'flapping in the breeze'
behind you

- Mine doesn't: very strong velcro fastening.

4. It once inflated at 30m on a dive. Thankfully, I was inside a wreck at
the time and I just got pinned to the ceiling.

- Never happend with my make.

My advice is to get a self-sealing buoy - like the AP Valves one. If you
keep the tension on it on ascent, it will stand clear in the water (up to=20
1m clear) and be more visable than a pyramidal one. Certainly from my
experiences on boats, these are the easiest ones to spot.

- Mine stands at least 1 metre tall.

Hilsen (Rgds.),
