Hey y'all --whilst reading about IWR/D I got to thinking about the ways chamber treatment differs from hanging on a rope or floaating your head up in a tub the way we do in caves down here for normal deco. Besides sucking down O2, treatment also consists of FLUID INTAKE TO THE MAX. I got an I-V of gator-aide on my ride and whizzed as much as a beer party in college. When either hanging to temp. supress a hit, or for plain ol' hangtime, having a good fluid supply at the deco stop makes as much sense to insure effective treatment as everything else you could do. When tom Morris and Woody Jasper had finished a 3,000 ft. downstream push (max.D 160) at a local siphon, they enjoyed warm soup taken into the mini-dumpster they had for a habitat. The all metal thermos supplied fluid, heat, and nourishment -- as well as being mmmmm, mmmmm, good. Our aquifer water is around 72F but after several hours, that feels cold and internal warming feels good. Anyway, fluid up before the dive. Stage a non-carbonated bev. at your last stop -- and improve the entire situation (bad or ggood as it may be) immeasureably with water, sports drink, chocolate, soup, juice. At that point the molecular diffusion rate across the surface of your nostril interior during bubble formation at greater than bathtub depths don't matter much -- you just need O2, time, and fluids! next time I'll tell you a little story about roger werner and his dry-suit P-valves, the logical sequel to this evening's little diving tip.
