I didn't want to really enter this conversation but I think I need to
ask a question. Don't mean to flame but I didn't know Tech diving and
mixed gas were always synonymous? Heck, you can do a saturation dive at
100 ft if you stay down long enough and have a longer deco hang than
most mixed gas dives. Might not be the smartest thing to do on Nitrox
but can be done. Would this not be an extreme dive, a technical dive?
What about a dive where you're penetrating a wreck and inside for a long
time, say an hour, is this not a technical dive? I'm not talking about
a dive where you pass a 5 ' exit every 20 feet or do a swim through.
I'm talking about where you research the wreck, plan for the
decompression, bring the proper equipment and gas, enter as planned,
follow the route planned and accomplish the goals of the dive. Then
exit the proper exit at the planned time all the while being in the deep
reassesses of the wreck without seeing an exit or another diver except
your buddy until you're making your deep stops on the line. Are the
cave dives where the depth isn't too deep "technical dives". Can't
comment much on the cave dives as I'm not a cave diver.

I think I understand the "generalization" for the definition but I think
it's incorrect. I agree we're not talking about dives to 130' in 100 ft
viz. 82 degree water with a planned "swim around" the wreck for 20
minutes. I think a wreck penetration that will require decompression,
multiple gasses and decompression times over an hour classify as a "tech
dive". By the converse, I don't know if I would think a dive to 140 for
20 minutes on 21/30 would really be considered my most as a "tech dive".

Hope I haven't offended anyone, I'll go back to lurking now....

Art.

As has been pointed out before, this is the Tech
List...we are talking about
Technical Diving, extreme diving, shit that can and does
kill folks. If you
can't afford to do the dives, you _don't_ do the
dives...period. We're not
talking about, 130' and shallower wrecks and such. This
list is devoted to
those of us involved in Mixed-Gas dives, requiring extra
training and
		equipment.

I don't tech dive for a career. I teach recreational
SCUBA for a career,
and keep the two separate. The folks I dive deep with
are either DIR, or I
don't dive with them. I think you are confusing the
nature of this list.
If you want 20 reasons why independent doubles are a
dumb ass idea, search
		the archives.

There are more DIR divers (at least it would seem) then
strokes on this
list. If you profess, what has amounted to sheer
stupidity (independent
doubles in this case) on the list you will be jumped
upon, fiercely. If
your ego is so easily bruised...join VPG and leave the
list. If you have
shit gear, EBAY.COM it, save some $$ and re-invest in a
proper setup. A DIR
setup is cheaper then a "Technical BC". I wish I had
some of the $$ I had
thrown out the window on shit...I would have my Gavin
Scooter by now, and
		some in the bank.

		Sean
